A Day in the Life..

Picnik collage

Day in the Life

Let me introduce myself on a more personal level, I am Beth Jones, Style Specialist for Quiksilver Womens. What exactly does that mean? I live and breathe my life as a stylist and work to collaborate often with the Quiksilver Womens team. I am here on the QSW Blog to give my perspective on how to wear each collection, what inspires me and to fill you in on the happenings of my life.

So today, I give you a peek into my world.

Currently, I am working with Quiksilver on an upcoming styling event (that you must stay tuned for) and also setting up for a photo shoot I am producing next week for my website, B. Jones Style. This photo shoot captures three women with whom I have been working with as a personal stylist and will showcase their individual style that we have built together.

I am excited to bring you more behind the scenes images and let you in on a day in my life as a stylist.

Getting Dressed With Quiksilver Women: Spring 2010

New York, New York

Spring is almost upon us. Almost.

In anticipation for this season’s light effortless layers and lived-in, loved-in styles, we invited some of our personal fashion heroes – a.k.a. our favorite New York bloggers – to come check out our spring 2010 collection. Inspired by the amazing location – a dream penthouse towering over the West Village- we decided to add a little twist to the event. Armed with a photographer and videographer, we asked these fashion connoisseurs to pick out their favorite pieces and style them to reflect their unique fashion perspectives.  We were thrilled to see the results. Each woman put her personal spin on things and gave us beautiful and oftentimes unexpected spring combinations to inspire any wardrobe. But what else do we expect from these talented fashion mavens?

For the next couple of weeks, we’ll highlight some of these stylish bloggers who dropped by. Stay tuned for more images & video.

Feeding your Fashion Soul

Picnik collage

I am always on the hunt for new inspiration, and it can come from anywhere – photos in a magazine, art, graffiti, a sign, a man on the street playing his saxophone – ANYWHERE.

Today, inspiration came to me in the form of an amazing street style blogger. We know about the heavy hitters (The Sartorialist and Garance Dore) but this was a new discovery. Her name is Maya Villiger, and she is the creator of  the wondrous website Turned Out. Everyday she posts photos of the coolest, chicest girls prancing through the streets of NYC. I love seeing who catches her eye, but something else that draws me back is her collage creations.

Her collage creations are her inspirations as she hits the streets, and often she finds a girl living and breathing the look she modge podged with magazine clippings.

So if you are searching for some new inspiration look to Maya as she turns out these masterpieces that will feed your fashion soul.

Reinvent, Recycle & Reinvigorate!

Here at QSW we love taking something, making it our own and giving it new life. Why not make your jewelry as unique as you are?!

Found object jewelry could be the answer you are looking for. All you need is some broken jewelry and an idea, and you can have a completely new piece to add to your collection.

We all have jewelry that is either broken or just dated sitting around gathering dust amongst our “stuff”.  A creative way to give this old, forgotten jewelry new life is to create an unexpected composition with the pieces you have left and combine them with new elements, such as wood, shells or even nuts and washers.  This will create a unique statement look.

Here are a few examples of what others have created!

Found Object Jewelry

“How-To” Tips:

A few items might help you out……needle nose pliers, easily mold-able wire and a few delicate, broken chains.  Stop in at your local thrift store to see if they have old jewelry that catches your eye.  You can easily take apart the elements you like and reinvent them to make them your own!

A great technique to use is a simple wire wrapping technique. If your object already has a hole in it – perfect! If not, you can manually create one (depending on the object) or you can simply wrap your object.

1)    Start at the top and wrap the wire tightly around your object,

2)    Space the wire out in the middle of your object

3)    Once you reach the bottom of your object, you’ll once again wind the wire tightly

4)    Snip the end of the wire on the wrapped object and bend it to create a circular shape

5)    You can now attach your object to your chain….voila!

(White Heat silk top — like Sade’s new album — available next month … stay tuned)

And in this battle for love, Legs wants to share this bit of advice:

She Does it Again!

Picnik collage

Look who I spotted turning out ANOTHER amazing creation using the Biscay Dress from the Spring ‘09 collection (now half off!) It’s Krystal Simpson, of course.

What I love about her look is that she perfectly combines some tomboy spirit with girlish glamour. On one end, we have a grey hoodie, skinny jeans and the easy striped Biscay Dress – but on the other hand, she has sequins peaking out from under the hoodie, gold booties and bright pink nails. What a mix/mash!

Why choose sides? You can play for team girl and team boy! Follow Krystal’s example and grab from your closet and your man’s.

QSW at Work: Kallie’s Statement Pieces

Meet Kallie, our fabulous intern/blogger/fashionista. We are slightly (and by slightly, we mean INCREDIBLY) obsessed with the way she pairs a few QSW items with 2 of our favorite of-the-moment trends: an eye-catching statement necklace and socks peeking slightly out under boots. Get her look with the Memory Jacket, Noemie Tank (both on sale so grab them fast!) and your own necklace/boots of choice. (For the record, Kallie’s boots are by Frye and necklace is Deena & Ozzy from Urban.)

Trend Spotting: Blush, Bashful and Oh-so-Nude

Picnik collage

If you were like me, you spent Sunday evening curled up on the couch for five hours straight. Watching the Golden Globes, of course! I can’t deny it – I absolutely love award show season. Moments on the red carpet can stay with you for a lifetime. My personal favorite will always be Michelle Williams in that sunshine yellow Vera Wang gown – everything was pure perfection.

Along with unforgettable moments, the red carpet turns out some of the coming season’s trends. Colors, shapes, and details show up predicting what we will see on retail racks everywhere. So what was a trend that stood out this year? It looks like Blush, Bashful and Oh-so-Nude have taken over.

Picnik collage

These soft and sweet colors will be BIG for spring, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear them in an all-out feminine way. Think about a boyfriend tee is a blush and bashful color – a perfect juxtaposition of pretty and tough.

Shop the season’s it-color at Quiksilver Womens in the Clerkenwell Shirt or the Songstress Top.
